What make a #place #endearing and #distinctive ?
Different ones will have different answers.
Different age groups will have different places in mind.
Different social class and different income group will have different places considered #endearing and #distinctive to them, respectively. However, there are great places that are #endearing and #distinctive and #appealing and #attractiveto majority of people groups, regardless of age groups, social classes, cultural backgrounds. What make these great places remain #attractive and #appealing, #endearing and #distinctive ?
As I ponder on the question, I thought if I ask a similar question not about #place per se, but about #food. What make a particular #food (or #dishes) #endearing and #distinctive ?
Say, #chilicrab, #nasibriani, #nasilemak, #chickenrice, #bakchormee, #bakkutteh, #charkwayteow, #rotiprata to Singaporeans; #kimchi, #ginsengchicken, #chicmai, #bulgogi to Koreans; #malagua, #pekingduck, #dazaxie, #lanzhoulamian, #dongborou to Chinese, #pizza, #lasagna, #panzanella, #spaghetti, #gelato to Italian; #croissants, #escargots, #macarons, #jambonbeurre, #steaktartare to French; #sashimi, #sushi, #unagi, #tempura, #soba, #yakitori to Japanese; #tomyamgoong, #somtum; #padthai, #khaopad, #gaengdaeng to Thais; #pho, #banhmi, #banhxeo, #bunbonambo to Vietnamese; #rendang, #bakso, #martabak, #sateayam, #nasigoreng to Indonesians ?
Food wise, the Chinese sum it up succinctly in #seven (7) words: #taste, #aroma, #color, #aesthetic (beauty), #story(meaning) #nutrition, #look (form/presentation) (味,香,色,美,意,养,形).
#PLACE wise, as I recollect, reimagine, and reexamine those places that i would/i had/i have revisit and have been revisiting, and thought about what make are the “things” that make me revisit and want to revisit them, I realised those places have such intrinsical elements and physical attributes/characteristics. I would sum them up in #nine (9) chracteristic #layers:
#iconic (architecture/streetscape), #historic (storyline), #dynamic (visible & invisible), #geographic(climate/weather/temperature), #botanic (landscape, greenery, nature), #ergonomic (human scale),
#demogrpahic (diversity & inclusivity), #traffic (access & linkages), #economic (activities & uses).
The first #three (3) layers provide #mind #comfort (visual & emotional); the next three layers provide #body comfort (physical); and the other three layers provide #basic and #foundational layers — #soul of the #place. Together, these #nine (9) chracteristical layers create and form such a #QUALITY of place (and space, atmosphere, environment), giving and making a #spirit of the place and space. That make it #unique, #memorable; #endearing, #distinctive! And leave inside ones #mind and #ones heart and ones #memory such a #image and #identity that they will not be able to forget, but imprinted deeply inside their #being!
